Un arma secreta para obispo

It is unfortunate how many times men are asked to be pastors who have been following Jesus for only 5-7 years. Seminary can educate a man, but it cannot make a man spiritually mature. There is no substitute for length of life in the faith. On occasions it works trasnochado well, but only because the Holy Spirit has performed a remarkable work in the life of the individual.

Some Christians are not aware that God has given us qualifications that are to guide us in choosing pastors. Unfortunately, some Christians operate with the world’s perspective that job or ministry performance is the criteria for determining if a pastor or elder should be appointed or “elected” to office and continue in office. They tell us to not be judgmental and just look at their performance. But in 1 Timothy 3: 2-7 and Titus 1:5-9 God has given us qualifications for selecting pastors, also called elders, and these qualifications are to be used to determine if they should remain in office.

It is the one who works hard at teaching and preaching. An elder who has the responsibility of teaching and preaching but forsakes that responsibility in order to excel in administration is not “especially” worthy of double honor. An elder who teaches and preaches is not necessarily worthy of double honor either, but the one who excels and works hard at teaching and preaching is worthy of double honor. The Greek word for “work hard” has the idea of being physically, mentally, and emotionally weary from study. Now that is working hard! To work only ten hours a week at digging in the sacred book is not working very hard.

. We also find that these men are to oversee the church. An elder is the person who has two type of responsibilities: oversight and shepherding.

Some think that an elder/pastor is innocent or a victim when he is divorced by his wife. But when a wife divorces an elder/pastor her actions reveal that he has failed other biblical qualifications. Clearly also his wife is not obedient to the Lord, which means that his household is not in order.

Titus 1:9 says that a pastor must hold to the “faithful word” – the Word of God. It is not enough for the Call Committee to read the doctrinal statement that he submitted when he applied for the position. How much of the Bible does he really know? If he is a recent seminary graduate, he should have a good grasp of scripture; but if he has been demodé of seminary for some time his grasp of scripture might be poor if he does not spend very much time studying it.

The key thought is to not sharply rebuke. Paul warns us to be gentle in our dealings with everyone, including false teachers. In the situation we are discussing, that includes pastors who teach error.

When this questionnaire has been used in the past, most leadership teams ranked sermon preparation and teaching and preaching near the top, but assigned a small number of hours to the responsibility – typically, less than ten hours per week. Administration, organization, counseling, time with people, and time with the staff received the greatest number of hours and a lower ranking.

Someone might be concerned that a pastor or an elder had committed sin, but the leader escapes being removed from office if only one person witnessed the sin. The apostle Paul addresses that situation in verses 24-25 when he discusses how to discipline elders.
